Alison Salmons

baroque viola

Alison Salmons is one of New Zealand’s foremost baroque viola players. Her first performance with Restoration was in 1999 at the Wellington Festival of Early Music, and she has regularly worked and toured with the group since then. Alison began studying historically informed performance with Graham McPhail while completing her music degree at Auckland University. After graduating from postgraduate study at Victoria University of Wellington, she played baroque viola with Extempore Plus for several years whilst working as a freelance violist in Auckland and later became a core member of NZ Barok, participating in their concert series, tours and CD recordings. Other highlights of her baroque viola career have included study in Portugal with Europe’s leading baroque viola specialist, Jürgen Kussmaul. As well as her performing work, Alison runs a busy violin and viola teaching studio in Auckland, and is in demand as a guest tutor in music courses around the country.
